The words of 2025 for Spanish and English speakers

For obvious reasons, any from Spain who is reading this post will be well aware of the meaning of the word that La Fundación del Español Urgente (FundéuRAE) chose as the word of 2024 in Spain:dana" or "isolated depression at high levels", which sadly gained relevance again at the end of October 2024.

The other candidates included words such as Inquiokupa, Micropiso, Reduflation, Turistification, and Woke.

In the English-speaking world, this function of the FundéuRAE is performed by the publishers of various dictionaries, most notably the Oxford English Dictionary, which each year selects a word that reflects significant social or cultural changes. Merriam-Webster also chooses a word based on user searches, while the Collins English Dictionary (https://www.collinsdictionary.com/woty) selects emerging terms that capture the zeitgeist.

  • Rizz: : In slang, rizz ("charisma") refers to a person's ability to attract or seduce others, especially in romantic contexts.
  • SkibidiThis nonsense term is associated with a viral internet trend involving humorous and exaggerated dance moves, often to catchy music.
  • Situationship: This word describes a romantic or sexual relationship that lacks a clear definition or commitment and falls somewhere between a casual date and a committed partnership.
  • Rawdogging: This term, most commonly used by those born between 1995 and 2010, became popular for use during airline flights and refers to the decision not to consume anything during a flight, from food and music to toilet facilities.It also means engaging in activities without preparation, support, equipment or protection.
  • Simp: Slang term used to describe someone who shows excessive sympathy and attention to another person, often someone they are romantically interested in, sometimes to the detriment of their self-esteem.
